ALTERNATE/ALTERNATIVE |
In U.S. usage, "alternate" is frequently used as an adjective, substituted for the older "alternative." A substitute delegate is, for instance, called an "alternate." In the U.K., however, "alternate" is still only a verb in standard usage and "alternative" is preferred when an adjective is wanted.
