Now that the era of apartheid (racial segregation) in South Africa is over, we hear this word less often; but American reporters continue to pronounce it as if it were a German word, as "apart-hide." Afrikaans, a dialect of Dutch, is not pronounced like German, and the correct pronunciation is also a handy mnemonic: "apart-hate."
